Long-distance cycle track D9

Romantic Road

Besides hiking on foot, setting out for longer excursions on two wheels is probably the best opportunity to get close to nature and to enjoy the magnificent, charming landscape impressions and the enchanting villages to the left and the right of Germany’s oldest tourist route.

Anyone climbing into the saddle here will be rewarded with untouched nature, historical highlights of medieval architecture and culinary delicacies. Here, cyclists will discover the best that Franconia, Baden, Württemberg, Swabia and Upper Bavaria have to offer.

Strung out like a pearl necklace, visitors from near and far will experience an endless succession of beautiful sights: historical old towns, medieval city walls with their fortified towers and gates, Baroque pilgrimage churches, Romanesque monastery walls and the dreams of Ludwig, the Bavarian fairy tale king, hewn in stone. The wildly romantic river valleys, weirs and the cultured landscape, tended through generations of farming, are equally attractive as well. Shady forests, a prehistoric meteorite crater and the awe-inspiring vista of the Ammergau Alps thrill the eyes of the leisurely bicycle tourists who need only bring sufficient time and inclination to pause for a moment and allow all of these new and fascinating impressions to sink in.

This varied, unique cycle tour from Würzburg to Füssen does not require the trained calf muscles of a professional cyclist. And although there are a couple of ascents to manage, there are not mountains to cross. The slightly longer, steeper ascents do not come until Pfaffenwinkel, but they are easily manageable, even for cyclists who are not quite in perfect shape. All the same, bicycle tourists should expect a variety of path surfaces. The Romantic Road Cycle Path is not designed for professional athletes on racing bikes and more for leisurely cyclists who would like to see and get to know the landscape, cities and their inhabitants.

The difficulty level of the route is classified as ‘easy’. It has a total length of approx. 500 km. The long-distance cycle track runs parallel to the Romantic Road on less busy, secondary paths, roads connecting villages, along rights of way and forest paths and is consistently signposted according to the German Cycling Association ADFC guidelines. There are also ideal route sections for people on mini-breaks and weekend tourists. Besides classic cycling trails, the landscape between Würzburg and Füssen has beautiful routes for mountain biking as well.

Subject to prior booking, tourists can also transport their bicycles on the buses that travel the Romantic Road from April to October. This means they can pick and choose the routes they want to cycle or can travel back to their original starting point.
