City gates – Accessing the old town
Of the 18 city gates that existed between the 13th and 15th centuries, only the Kittstein Gate, the Customs Gate and Main Gate remain preserved today. Main Gate was built between 1200 and 1400, but not mentioned for the first time in official records until 1459/63. As an important northern entrance into the city, Main Gate leads into Maingasse, which connects the market square with Mainlände, one of the city’s vital transhipment and storage points until the early 20th century. Main Gate is still one of the principal thoroughfares into old town. The stately gate with its battlements lost around 1.5 metres in elevation in 1883, when a series of floods raised the banks of the Main by precisely this height.
